Short announcements & talking-head videos

Read it once.
Then watch the take.

A script that looks clear on the page can feel hurried on camera. Try a short rehearsal before you record the message you actually want to share.

Give the viewer one clear next step

For a short announcement, start with what is happening, then include the details someone needs to act. A place, date and next step are more useful than a long opening. Verify names, dates and contact details with the person responsible before recording.

Write the words you would actually say. Break the text into short paragraphs, and read it aloud once. Where you run out of breath or keep changing a sentence, edit the sentence rather than trying to speak faster. Do not publish a rehearsal containing private customer, pupil or attendee details.

You can use paper notes beside the phone and the ordinary camera. A scrolling script is another option, not a requirement. This checklist does not assume a particular app, microphone or studio setup.

Choose a pace you can follow

  1. Set up a private test. Check what is visible behind you, place the phone securely and decide whether the final video needs portrait or landscape framing.
  2. Read a short passage at your normal pace. Start with the sample below or a few lines of your own message. Do not rush to match moving text.
  3. If you use a teleprompter, adjust it to you. Increase text size or spacing if needed, and slow the scroll when you lose your place. Keep the text close enough to the lens to read comfortably; do not cover your face with a solid panel if you need to see your framing.
  4. Pause and restart. Make sure you know how to stop the prompt before the real take. Check again after rotating the phone or changing the setup.

A live camera preview is not necessarily a recording. Look for the app's explicit recording state before expecting a saved video. Rehearsing with your face visible can help you check framing, but it does not guarantee natural eye contact or a polished result.

Check the file, not only the preview

When you are ready, record a short test in your chosen camera or recording app. Play back the actual saved take before filming the full message.

  • Listen: are your words audible and is the sound acceptable? A microphone permission or a moving timer alone does not prove useful audio was recorded.
  • Look: is your face visible, is the orientation correct, and is the background suitable? Check that any text or prompt controls you do not want in the final video are absent.
  • Follow the message: can the viewer identify the purpose and next action? Check names and dates again. Replace placeholder details with confirmed information.
  • Check the handoff: open the exported file and confirm the intended recipient and sharing channel. Saving or tapping Share does not prove someone received or watched it.

If the test is wrong, change one thing and try the short passage again. Do not buy a plan simply to discover whether an app records in the way you need: first read its included features, recording limits and billing terms.

An original sample to read aloud

This is a fictional community announcement. Use it privately to test pace; it is not a real event or a promise that reading it takes a fixed number of seconds.

Hello, and thanks for being here.

This Saturday, we are holding a small welcome morning
at the community room.

You can come along, meet the organisers,
and ask questions about the next session.

Before sharing this message, I will confirm
the time, location and how to reserve a place.

Thanks for listening. I look forward to seeing you.

If you add pause cues for practice, remove them from any spoken text or make sure you understand how your chosen tool treats them. This sample does not rely on an app recognising special cue syntax.
