Football grounds & personal match memories

Three visits.
Not three grounds.

A ground, a visit and a match are different things. Keep them separate and you can revisit the story without accidentally inflating the collection.

Decide what your collection counts

Use a notebook or your own private spreadsheet. You do not need an app, an account or a complete fixture database to start.

  • Ground: the place itself. In this worksheet, a second visit to the same physical ground does not add another ground.
  • Visit: one occasion when you went there. You might attend a match, take a tour or visit without seeing a game.
  • Attended match: a game you actually watched there. An opponent or score you cannot remember does not become a known fact just because the date is in your diary.

These are the worksheet's conventions, not official groundhopping rules or a promise that every app calculates its totals this way. Write your own convention beside your total. For a tournament or a day with several matches, note the visits and games separately so you can apply that convention consistently.

A sponsor-name change alone does not create a new physical ground under this convention. Keep the name you knew at the time and the current name together. If a club has moved, check the location rather than matching only the club or stadium name.

Two grounds, three visits, two attended matches

Every place, team, date and score below is fictional. These are worksheet columns, not promised app fields or live fixtures.

A small fictional collection
VisitPhysical groundWhat happenedDetails known
18 May 2024Old Quarry, RiverbridgeAttended a matchQuarry United 2–1 Riverside FC
12 April 2025Old Quarry, RiverbridgeAttended another matchMatch attended; opponent and score unknown
21 June 2025East Meadow, HillfordVisited the ground; no match attendedA daytime visit, not a fixture

On a narrow screen, scroll the table horizontally.

Distinct physical grounds: Old Quarry + East Meadow = 2
Visit occasions: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
Attended matches: 1 + 1 + 0 = 2
Matches with a recorded score: 1

The second Old Quarry visit adds a memory and a match, not a third ground. East Meadow adds a ground and a visit, not an attended match. A missing score is not 0–0. Leave it unknown.

Do not turn a vague memory into an exact date

If you only remember “spring 2019”, retain that wording in a private note. Do not change it to 1 January 2019 just to fill a required date field. An exact-date app may not be suitable for that incomplete record yet; keep it outside the structured diary until you can verify the date.

When you consult a ticket, programme, personal photo or fixture source, record what it actually establishes. A fixture listing may confirm that a game took place; it does not prove that you attended it. A photo's file date may have changed when copied. Keep a remembered detail distinguishable from one you checked.

For a correction, keep the original note, the changed detail and the reason in your own records. Do not quietly merge two visits because their ground names match, or duplicate a visit after renaming a ground.

Before sharing a ticket image or photo, check for names, barcodes, faces and other details you do not intend to publish. A personal diary need not become a public itinerary.

Open the export. Keep the photos too.

  1. Check a known record. Open the actual exported file and compare its date, ground, city, notes and any chosen map position with your diary.
  2. Check completeness. Compare the record count and look for missing or repeated visits. An import preview is useful before adding records to another collection.
  3. Separate images from text. A CSV may preserve text and positions without the attached photo or ticket. Keep original images separately and label them so you can associate them with the visit.
  4. Keep a second copy somewhere you control. An export on the same phone is not an independent copy if that phone is lost. Check that you can open the copied file; do not post it publicly as a backup.

This is a manual file check, not a guarantee of loss-free restoration or official attendance verification. A map pin you choose is your own record of a position, not evidence that you were there.

A copyable visit checkpoint

No account, email address or app download is required. Keep uncertain details in the worksheet rather than inventing exact dates or results.
